What is Urinary Incontinence? (UI)

Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine through the urethra, often while resting or sleeping. It can be anything from a few drops to big puddles! It is distinguished from other conditions by the fact that the dog is totally unaware of it happening. They will often urinate as normal in-between.

Treatment is possible for some of the causes of urinary incontinence but is likely to be most successful based on accurate diagnosis of the cause of the problem.

Most often incontinence is due to failure of storage of urine when the bladder is full due to a leaky urinary sphincter muscle (which should normally prevent urine leaking from the bladder) however, there can be other causes.
